At WTPS, we believe that music is an important creative and social art that supports children's mental health and wellbeing. All children have the opportunity within curriculum lessons to engage with a diverse range of musical experiences through listening, singing, interpreting music through dance, and playing and composing using both tuned and untuned percussion instruments. Singing holds a significant place in our daily school routines, encompassing worship, singing assemblies, and the opportunity to participate in our choir as an extra-curricular activity.
The majority of our music curriculum is delivered through the Kapow scheme, which introduces children to a variety of instruments while providing a structured framework for developing their musical skills and knowledge as they progress through the school. Children are afforded ample opportunities to showcase their singing or instrumental talents during class, whole school assemblies, and at church. Notable events include our annual Nativity production for FS and KS1, an end-of-year production for KS2, and a whole-school Christmas Carol Concert, in which all children participate. These performances are met with enthusiastic support from parents and the local community, fostering a sense of pride and achievement.
In addition to our curriculum music, we provide opportunities for children to access instrument tuition with a peripatetic music teacher during the school day. We also offer regular extra-curricular music clubs such as musical theatre, ukulele band, introduction to musical instruments, and choir. Furthermore, children have the opportunity to experience professional performances by visiting theatre companies. Our regular 'celebration assemblies' serve as a fantastic showcase for each child's developing musical talent, allowing them to perform for an invited audience of parents and friends.
