Governance

Our Governors

Our Chair of Governors is Derek Smith

The Governing Body of West Tytherley CE Primary School works as a team, with the Executive Headteacher, to manage the school. Our governing body has responsibility for both schools in the Federation – covering the primary schools in Broughton and West Tytherley.

Governors are responsible for making sure the schools provide good quality education. They encourage effective ways of teaching and learning by setting school aims and policies. They work very closely with the Executive Headteacher, who is responsible for the day-to-day running of the school.

The Governing Body

The Governing body is accountable for the performance of the school to parents and the wider community. Governors are at the heart of how the school operates and:

  • Plan the school’s future direction.

  • Make decisions on the school’s budget and staffing.

  • Make sure the curriculum is broad, balanced and relevant.

  • Decide how the school can encourage pupils’ spiritual, moral and cultural development.

  • Monitor how the school provides for all its pupils, including those with special educational needs and disabilities.

The full governing body (FGB) ensures it has sufficient governors to undertake its duties effectively, and maintains a quorum for a full FGB meeting of not less than seven members.  At present, the FGB consists of the Headteacher, two parent Governors (elected by the parents), a staff governor, Foundation governors (appointed by the Church), co-opted governors and one governor appointed by the local authority.

Our Foundation governors

The role of the Foundation governors is to make sure that the school serves the community by providing an education of the highest quality within the context of Christian belief and practice. The Foundation governors support the school by encouraging an understanding of the meaning and significance of faith and Christian values through the experience it offers to all its pupils.

In accordance with our Standing Orders, we meet as a full Governing body at least once every term and typically meet 6 times per year.  We have two sub-committees, focusing on Standards (covering topics such as the curriculum, attainment, progress, behaviour and SEND) and Resources (covering topics such as finance, staffing and premises). Each committee has its own Chair, and written terms of reference which are reviewed annually.  The Standards committee meets once per term, and the Resources committee meets twice per term. All governors are appointed for four-year terms. Many Governors are in school on a regular basis, either in their official capacity or just dropping off or picking up their children. A snapshot of the work carried out by the Governing body in the 2022-23 school year is provided here:
